James Haywood (b. 1991) is a Franco-British artist and engineer based near Montpellier. His practice emerged from research into alternatives to conventional concrete and the aesthetic, technical, and environmental potential of mineral materials. Trained in aerospace engineering, he approaches sculpture through experimentation, combining engineering principles with an intuitive search for balance, simplicity, and emotion.

Why do we continue to rely on Portland cement—one of the world's most carbon-intensive construction materials—when its environmental impact and long-term durability limitations are so well documented? In France and around the world, new mineral materials are emerging. Some recreate the natural processes through which stone forms, while others transform industrial by-products and overlooked resources into durable construction materials.

Since 2019, Haywood's sculptures have served as an ongoing field of experimentation. The resulting works occupy the space between sculpture and design, where minimal geometries meet organic imperfections, inviting a slower, more attentive way of looking. Conceived as one-of-a-kind pieces, they are made to endure—both through the longevity of their materials and the lasting relationships they establish with the people who live alongside them.

His work grows from a contemplation of humanity's place within the wider universe and our relationship with the natural world. Every stage of creation takes place in his atelier, from the earliest sketches and material research to mould-making, casting, finishing, electronics, photography, and packing. This continuity allows each work to evolve slowly through repetition, adjustment, and time, mirroring the natural processes that shape landscapes, minerals, and life itself.
